Saunton Sands

Saunton Sands is a breathtaking 3.5-mile stretch of golden beach, attracting families, surfers, and visitors of all abilities.

There is a beach car park with disabled spaces, with a recently tarmacked surface that leads down to the slipway.

Surfboard hire is available on the beach and dogs are permitted all year round.

It is truly a beautiful beach with all the facilities for a great day out.

Parking

Generous disabled parking spaces are available on the right hand side as you enter the car park through the barrier.

The car park surface from the disabled parking to the bottom of the slipway has recently been tarmacked, so access is considerably better now.

Equipment

Saunton offers a range of beach accessibility equipment to help more people enjoy the coastline.

Beach wheelchairs*, including an Access For All Hippocampe beach wheelchair, are available to hire free of charge from the beach shop. For those who require additional trunk support, a vacuum backrest can also be borrowed for use with the Hippocampe chair.

A Banana Board is available to borrow to assist with transfers.

We also have a big-wheeled rollator designed for use on sand. These are ideal for visitors who need a little extra support while walking on the beach. Each rollator is fitted with brakes, a seat for resting, and a small basket for carrying personal items.

A mobile hoist is also available at Saunton for visitors who require assistance with lifting. The hoist is suitable for users up to 140 kg (22 stone). Please note that users must provide their own sling, and staff are unable to assist with transfers.

An Airtushi inflatable seat insert for babies and toddlers, that fits in the Hippocampe beach wheelchair, is available to borrow. Giving support to smaller children. Safety guidelines on the packaging should be followed.

* Please note some beach wheelchairs here do not belong to Access For All.

Beach access

The concrete slipway is easy to navigate in a wheelchair.  Take caution at the end of the slipway as there has been some beach matting put down which can be very uneven.
Due to natural environmental conditions the sand moves from under this matting and there can be debris on the beach left by the tide so take care and ensure you have the support required for you to get onto and off the beach.

Toilets

There is one disabled toilet at Saunton. It is accessed via the level walkway in front of the shop.

It is a decent size toilet, however please note that there is no toilet seat on the toilet itself making it’s use very limited.
This is not a radar key facility and it is operated by the council not the beach owner.
