Facilities and Activities on our North Devon Beaches.

Beach access can be challenging for anyone, and those challenges are often amplified for individuals with disabilities.
From disabled parking and accessible pathways to beach wheelchairs and adequate toilet facilities, there’s a lot to consider before even setting foot on the sand.

Adaptive Surfing

Croyde is proud to be home to the UK’s first official Adaptive Surfing Hub, recognised by Surfing England. Run by The Wave Project in conjunction with partner surf school Surf Southwest, their mission is to make surfing accessible to everyone, breaking down barriers so that more people can experience the physical and mental benefits of time in the ocean.

The Adaptive Surfing Hub is equipped with specialised gear designed to make access to the waves easier. It offers a range of beach access wheelchairs, adaptive wetsuits with zips in the arms, legs, front, and back for easier dressing, and from 2025, there will be separate wetsuit leggings and jackets. There are also a variety of surfboards tailored to different needs, allowing individuals to catch waves independently or with the support of The Wave Project’s highly trained instructors and dedicated volunteers.

Beyond individual surfers, we love getting families involved— after all, there’s nothing better than sharing waves together. We also work with a range of organisations, including Help for Heroes, Whizz Kidz, British Blind Sport, and Devon Stroke Association, to ensure even more people can experience the joy of surfing.

At Croyde’s Adaptive Surfing Hub, we believe the ocean is for everyone. Whether you’re a first-time surfer or an experienced rider, the facilities are here to help make your surfing experience safe, enjoyable, and truly unforgettable.

Beach Wheelchairs

We have two styles of beach wheelchair, a Hippocampe and a Wheeleez. The Hippocampe is low down but very comfortable and suits a child to an adult approximately 6ft tall. This wheelchair has a push handle as well as a pull cord at the front making navigating beach soft sand easier.

Our Hippocampe beach wheelchairs have a lap-belt plus an optional chest harness. There are armrests and an adjustable headrest. The Wheeleez is higher up and more upright which some users find easier to transfer to, which also includes a lap-belt.

Changing Places

Our Changing Places facility at Croyde won best Changing Places 2025 as voted for by the public.

This facility is Radar key locked.

It has a height-adjustable sink, toilet with drop bars, height-adjustable changing table, and shower with a folding shower seat and a shower curtain to prevent your wheelchair from getting wet. There is also a privacy screen and an H-frame hoist.

Banana Boards

Each beach has the use of a  Banana Transfer board should you need to use one to aid your transfers. The staff at each location are not trained in manual handling and cannot assist with transfers but the boards are for your own use.

Please return them after each use so that others may also benefit from using them.

Your feedback

Inclusivity is at the heart of what we do, and we’re always looking to progress. If you notice anything that could be improved—whether it’s missing facilities, access issues, or ways we can enhance your experience—we’d love to hear from you.

Your feedback helps us make the beach a truly welcoming space for all. Drop us a message at hello@accessforallbeaches.org.uk, and let’s keep making waves together!
